The Archie code: a study in sexual stereotyping as reflective of a basic dilemma in American society
Article Abstract:
Analysis of characterization in Archie comics reveals that inherent sexual stereotyping indicates a fundamental paradox in society, where the male has to chose between material success and intimacy, and the female achieves individuality only through sacrifice or attractiveness. Males are portrayed as the deciders and females as the object of decisions. Stereotyping in these comics is more deceptive as the comics boast of the absence of graphic violence and sex, and mask this stereotyping with professed naivete or juvenile wit.

Gil's world
Article Abstract:
The 'Gil Thorp' comic strip portrays cultural diversity in a typical middle-American town where athletics is highly regarded. Gil Thorp, the title character, is a role model in the entire Milford High School, where he coaches the baseball, basketball and football teams. He espouses the idea that diversity is not dangerous since it is just an abstract concept and that sports and good will can be a means to resolve some problems.
