The beginnings of child welfare research in the United States
Article Abstract:
The start of child welfare research in the US was reviewed focusing on the contributions of several outstanding persons including the disagreement between hereditarian and reformist values and attitudes. Findings revealed that both hereditarian and reformist values and attitudes have a significant impact on the development of child welfare research as well as the related professions. Both the social and eugenic reformers contributed to the start of a strong scientific background in child welfare and the human services that was subsequently discredited and abandoned.
