The burden of smoking-attributable mortality among African Americans - Indiana, 1990
Article Abstract:
A study of the degree of mortality in Indiana caused by cigarette smoking using the estimates of smoking-attributable mortality (SAM) and years of potential life (YPLL) revealed a higher burden of tobacco-related mortality among Afro Americans, apparent from their higher YPLL and SAM scores, compared to Caucasians. The SAM rate was 9% higher for Afro American women and 4% higher for Afro American men compared to their white counterparts. The results signify the need for more targeted smoking-control interventions and anti-tobacco campaigns.
