The politics of pornography research
Article Abstract:
Steven Childress transmitted misinformation about the usefulness of aggregate studies of the effects of pornography on sex crime in his review essay of three books on the subject. The theme of his article, that in violent pornography the violence is the harmful component, is based on his incorrect idea that correlation studies of crime rates are not conclusive. The conclusion of 'The Question of Pornography, Research Findings and Policy Implications' that increased availability of pornography does not lead to a marked increase in rape is accurate.

Pornography, "serious rape," and statistics: a reply to Dr. Kutchinsky
Article Abstract:
Berl Kutchinsky's studies try to establish a correlation between the availability of pornography and sex crimes, but do not control for separate factors such as social events which may have skewed results. Studies such as his can only be considered reliable when combined with a multivariate technique such as regression analysis. An undue elasticity in the definition of rape is also troubling.
