The polls - trends: crime, the police, and civil liberties
Article Abstract:
Majority of Americans support the allocation of greater resources for get-tough approaches to criminals, such as capital punishment, longer sentences and community notification. Americans' view of policing has also changed since the 1980s, as they have greater approval of limited gun control measures as well as higher esteem of police performance. There is also growing evidence of willingness to curtail civil liberties in the interest of crime prevention. These are among current public opinion trends toward crime, the police and civil liberties issues concerning criminal justice from 1980 to 1997.

Welfare
Article Abstract:
Public welfare reform has become a burning political issue since the Republicans won control of Congress in 1994. Surveys of attitudes about welfare reform reveal that a majority of people believe the amount paid for welfare programs is too high and that support for such programs has eroded in recent years. Support still exists for the idea of helping poor people and poor children, but not for the programs that actually provide the assistance. Questions about welfare reform from different surveys formed the core of the examination.

Social Security - an update
Article Abstract:
Public opinion about Social Security has changed since the program's inception in 1935. The instability of the program's financial position and projections that it will be insolvent by 2029 leads to less confidence in the system, but people do not seem to mind the possibility that the size of contributions will likely rise to prevent insolvency. The taxation of benefits is much more controversial.
