The social shaping of radwaste management: the cases of Sweden and Finland
Article Abstract:
The acceptance of nuclear power requires a solution to radioactive waste and geological disposal is supported by most countries despite difficulties in choosing sites. There are three main approaches to the issue of radioactive waste disposal: an economic, a political and a scientific-technical approach. The scientific-technical approach assumes technological control is possible. The economic approach emphasizes the potential benefits of having a site. The political approach addresses the moral and political consequences of siting. The cases of Finland and Sweden are presented.
