The spontaneous suppression of racial stereotypes
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the spontaneous suppression of racial stereotyping will influence subsequent racial judgements. Results of a preliminary experiment indicated that people would write less stereotypic stories when under conditions which invited the spontaneous suppression of stereotypes. A second experiment involved participants judging the hostility of an African American. Participants in groups which had earlier rated their attitudes towards African Americans under either directed or spontaneous suppression of racial stereotyping judged the person as more hostile than did participants in the control group.

The impact of affective and cognitive focus on attitude formation
Article Abstract:
The effects of unobtrusive affective and cognitive focus on attitude formation are examined, by inducing focus in participants by allowing them to work on a word-search puzzle consisting of either affective or cognitive words. It is seen that in the affective focus condition, evaluations are more congruent with the valence of the affective information than they are in the cognitive focus condition, and affective focus results in enhanced recall of affective information.
