Joel Cherry leads Novozymes's research on biomass enzymes and is now focusing on cellulose-processing enzymes secreted by Trichoderma reesei. His team claims to have reduced the cost of the enzyme mixture to less that $1 per gallon of ethanol. Novozymes is now testing the efficacy of the enzyme mixture.

Research on cellulosic ethanol should come up with a breakthrough in the next five to seven years if ethanol is to become more widely used as fuel. Proponents of cellulosic ethanol believe huge research budgets can help achieve such a breakthrough and overcome obstacles to the use of ethanol.
