The relationship between school social systems and learning is discussed, in reply to comments by William J. Carbonaro and by Maureen T. Hallinan and by Warren N. Kubitschek. Theoretical and methodological issues are examined, the latter including variables in relation to concepts, multicollinearity and parameter specification, school-level variables, and measures of social closure.
