Vietnam: folly, quagmire or inevitability?
Article Abstract:
The US' military involvement in the Vietnam war from 1961 to 1975 was sparked by several critical events that occured prior to the conflict. The tragedy of World War II and the upsurge of Soviet-backed communist movements in Indochina forced a succession of US presidents to revisetheir policies and interfere with Asian affairs. These ultimately led to the Vietnam conflict. However, there are indications that US involvement in the warwas uncalled for as shown by the collapse of communist states and the economic stagnation in Vietnam.

Cambodia: lasting key to Southeast Asia's stability
Article Abstract:
Cambodia is Asia's weakest link despite many positive developments in the country. Cambodia is caught in the middle of Vietnam's expansion to the south and west, Thailand's natural tendency to play off its antagonistic neighbors against each other and China in the north. China, Japan and India are the emerging regional powers to call upon. Cambodia could remain a regional problem of the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should ASEAN withstand the pressures of the regional powers.

Examining the 'authoritarian advantage' in Southeast Asian development in the wake of Asian economic failures
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the premise that authoritarian regimes support an advantage over more democratic ones in introducing and supporting economic development. Events associated with the Asian financial crisis were examined to analyze the concept of authoritarian advantage. Results indicated that authoritarian states are poor at promoting accountability and transparency in affairs related to finance.
