Ways of thinking about the long-term care of the baby-boom cohorts
Article Abstract:
A long-term care policy for the aging baby boom cohorts needs to be reconciled with socio-economic realities and the role of informal exchanges of care. Problems of long-term care for baby boomers stem from various assumptions regarding the role of social policy in the aging process. The generational equity perspective advocates a selective public sector role and the expansion of private savings to cover long-term care contingencies. The generational investment perspective suggests state intervention via universal services, consistent with President Clinton's health care reform proposals.
