When Robert E. Park was (Re) writing "The City": Biography, the social survey, and the science of sociology
Article Abstract:
A new interpretation of the writing process of Robert E. Park's 'The City', the famous paper he published initially in 1915 is described. Park's biographical encounters with some active promoters of the social survey approach are evidenced and are their influence on his 1915 essay which is carefully analyzed showing notably that curious intellectual omissions in 'The City' can be traced back to the previous encounters.

The Davis-Moore theory of stratification: the life course of a socially constructed classic
Article Abstract:
The history of the functional theory of stratification proposed by Davis and Moore, which is related to the universal necessity for social inequality in any social order, is studied. The Davis-Moore theory was criticized on logical and empirical grounds but it still forms an important part of conventional sociology.
