Why passion for the city has been lost
Article Abstract:
Passionate public debates over the city in the 1960s has given way to indifference due to various factors. The debates over the ills of urbanization had initially received support from the media, the intellectual community and the polity. Later the interest in urban problems failed to cause emotional concern as a large part of the middle class shifted to the suburban areas. The political commitment to urban policy correspondingly lessened, and the mass media refused to consider the urban crisis newsworthy. Finally, academics have also failed to connect the city to public concerns.
