A review of the act of swimming serves as an initial step in enhancing swimming speed. Stanford University women's swim team head coach Richard Quick believes that establishing whole-body awareness in swimming leads to dramatic improvement in swimming speed. The use of the whole body in swimming can be initially undertaken by keeping the body as long, straight and narrow as possible. Such technique lessens the resistance created by the body on the water which leads to greater speed with less effort.

Swimming coach Richard Quick has established a solid reputation as a championship-caliber coach by winning the 1998 American Swimming Coaches Assn's Coach of the Year award. He espouses proper balance, line and posture for a more efficient and faster swimming form. Swimmers also need to breathe right not by turning their heads, but by rotating the body without raising the head. Working on the proper swimming technique is more important than performing more workouts.

Hanging in the balance
Article Abstract:
The key to swimming faster is better balance in the water. This involves sinking in equilibrium to the point where the water supports the swimmer. The techniques to balancing in the water are presented. These include dropping down the head, pressing the body to get more weight on the opposite side of the legs to force them to rise, looking up to breathe, getting over the tendency to swim on the surface and practicing the drills every day.
