Blacktail deer are indigenous to the northwestern coast of the United States, and the dense native terrain makes hunting the animals difficult. Successful spotting and stalking of the deer require a specialized approach that accounts for the different ecological systems.

The numbers of mule deer in the Book Cliffs region of Utah have been reported to be in decline. The decrease in population has been blamed on human property development and the effects of being killed by predators, like the mountain lion.

People wishing to hunt on privately-owned property must first gain permission. Finding out names of landowners ahead of time helps. Rules set up by the landowner should be strictly obeyed, and a follow up expressing thanks is appreciated.
