The percentage of Latino ballplayers in Major League Baseball has increased from 14% in 1991 to 24% in 1997. Observers cite lack of interest by young African-Americans for the demographic shift. African-American athletes make up 80% of the NBA and 70% of the NFL, but only 17% of the Major Leagues.

Some 67% of former professional football players have permanent injuries, while some 20% have marital or emotional problems. In addition, the vast majority are unprepared to cope with the financial transition that takes place after their playing days.
