Researchers have analyzed 43 studies done over the past 28 years, and they have found little evidence that the weight gain and loss cycle of dieting slows metabolism, alters fat distribution, or jeopardizes lean body mass. The most significant consequence of dieting cycles lower morale.

Newborns given a sucrose solution before they were pricked on the heel to take a blood sample cried for less time than infants given water or a weaker sucrose solution before the heel prick. Cuddling the infant may have been as effective, but that was not tested.
