Dialing for dollars: Many PGA Tour events spent 2002 frantically trying to raise money to keep their events alive
Article Abstract:
In 2002, Second Tour events -- second-tier PGA events that do not draw the top players -- were losing title sponsors and struggling to keep operations going. In difficult financial times, major companies were not willing to make the four-year, $25 million committment. The Greater Hartford Open and The Phoenix Open, along with tournaments in Hilton Head, Las Vegas, and Pennsylvania, are all feeling the pinch.
