Metabolic demands of intense aerobic interval training in competitive cyclists
Article Abstract:
This study uses muscle biopsies, venous blood samples, and pulmonary gas exchange measures to evaluate the metabolic demands of a fifty-minute interval training session in elite cyclists. Findings indicate that the physiological responses and fuel requirements related to interval training are comparable to those observed during a competitive one-hour race.

Modeling sprint cycling using field-derived parameters and forward integration
Article Abstract:
A series of experiments were conducted to determine whether model parameters could be accurately quantified during field tests, and whether a model, using field-based parameters could predict cycling speed during high-power, non-steady-state cycling. It was believed that modeling procedure allows cyclists, coaches, and sport scientists to perform aerodynamic testing, optimization and modeling without the use of wind tunnel.

Effects of different interval-training programs on cycling time-trial performance
Article Abstract:
Calibrated interval-training programs can enhance competitive bicycle racing performance. Researchers trained 20 male cyclists, using a polynomial model. Sprints of four minutes each simulating the race pace improved race performance in a 40-km setting, lasting about one hour. Very short bursts of training lasting between 30 seconds and four minutes enhanced endurance performance. There are probably several mechanisms at play during interval training.
