Flock of Fools
Article Abstract:
A Chicago Tribune columnist decides to celebrate his 40th birthday by training for the1998 LaSalle Banks Chicago Marathon. He forms a light-hearted organization, the For Once in Our Lives Society (FOOLS). The result was an unexpected enjoyment of the discipline and the quest, many new friendships, and thirty pounds shed. 141 of the starting 262 FOOLS finished, but the columnist fell 5 minutes short of beating Oprah Winfrey's time of a few years earlier.
