Several features need to be considered when selecting a handheld VHF radio. The radio's signal power must be strong enough to be able to counteract other signals fighting for the same radio space. The battery life and the ability to withstand rough conditions should also be considered.

Battery death: how to prevent it

Persistently undercharging a marine battery causes its lead sulphate to harden until it can not be recovered by charging. A properly regulated battery charger used when the boat is docked can periodically bring the battery to full charge.

Charge it right

Maintaining a full charge in a boat's battery will prolong its life. 'Smart chargers' have programs that control bulk charge, absorption charge, float charge and equalization capability.
