The pain of osteoarthritis, the disintegration of joint cartilage, can be eased with exercise. Light aerobics, resistance training and flexibility exercise reduces the discomfort and improves the condition of the joints, because cartilage depends on movement for delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

Joint pain caused by use, injury or accidents to the cartilage may be able to be repaired with a new surgical procedure called carticel. Currently, the procedure is approved for knees in the US and its use on other joints is being evaluated. Other treatments are described.

A simple new blood test called ImmunoCap is as accurate as the traditional skin test for allergies and much less irritating. However, some allergists are reluctant to abandon skin tests.
