Hope and glory: Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie, world record holder at 5000 and 10,000 meters, carries the hopes of his country into the Olympic Games

The people of Ethiopia, divided along political, ethnic and religious lines, are nearly unanimous in their support for perhaps the greatest distance runner ever, and their countryman, Haile Gebrselassie. Many hope that his win in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics will bring attention and help to their country.
