Laura Bakos was the first American to ski off of the 8,000 meter peak of Cho Oyu in Tibet. However, another American claimed to have done so before her, Kristoffer Erickson, and got all the fame for the accomplishment, even though he started from a point that was not technically the summit. The article sets the record straight.

Freestyle skier Bergoust won a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships, despite sustaining a severe shoulder injury in Jan 1997. The US Freestyle Team is competitive, but needs to become more disciplined in 1998. The team's best performers include Donna Weinbrecht and Ian Edmondson.
