Hunting with hawks

Sixteen-year old Josh Shown is an avid falconer who lives in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska. He and his red-tailed hawk Bluto hunt small prey such as rabbits using the ancient techniques of falconry. Typically, Shown causes a rabbit to break from cover, then the hawk attacks.

Hunter Jack Crockford hunts squirrels in the winter with a blackpowder caplock rifle, and he likens it to hunting deer because one has to be very quiet. Crockford's techniques are discussed, and four good squirrel guns are described.

Hunting where others cannot go

Deer are most abundant near waterways, and hunters who use boats to cross a river or stream and get away from roads are most likely to have successful hunts. Deer like quiet, and the least populated spots provide the best hunting.
