Cardiac performance in endurance-trained and moderately active young women
Article Abstract:
This article examines cardiac performance during exercise in young women who are either moderately active or endurance-trained. Findings indicate that endurance-trained women have increased blood volume and greater stroke volume during incremental exercise when compared to moderately active women.

Exercise cardiac function in young through elderly endurance trained women
Article Abstract:
Some cardiovascular responses to exercise decrease with age in endurance-trained (ET) women. Research points to an age-related decline in VO 2max due to decreased maximal heart rate, stroke volume, and cardiac output. The primary advantage in cardiac performance during exercise involved diastolic function. The stroke volume increased steadily up to VO 2max in ET women of all ages.

Induced hypervolemia, cardiac function, VO(2max), and performance of elite cyclists
Article Abstract:
Research has found that increased blood volume does not significantly benefit maximal oxygen consumption or endurance performance in tests using trained cyclists as subjects. These findings support the theory that endurance-trained elite athletes may have already achieved ideal blood volume levels, and have little or no areas for improvement.
