Article Abstract:
Other countries have caught up with the US in sailing and the US no longer sets the standard. This was evidence in the disappointing showing of the US teams at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA. The US must spend more money and energy in opening up the recruiting and training of US sailing athletics.

Four women and 12 men out af a field of 230 contenders at the Olympic trials held on the Wilmington River in Savannah, GA, won the right to compete in the 1996 Olympics sailing events. A profile is given on each of the athletes along with the type of feat each will compete in.

The many rule changes in the 1998 Whitbread Round-the-World Race have radically changed the fundamentals of the sailing competition. Some competitors have criticized the introduction of additional short legs and the introduction of Whitbread 60s to the race.
