Marathon runners can learn as much from watching a race as they can from participating in it. What is clear is that a runner's attitude towards and approach to a race is as important as conditioning. Success depends upon the ability to manage the bad patches with relentless determination.

A newcomer to running, at the age of 40, describes the trials and tribulations of getting his body into shape, and the embarrassment involved in entering his first race. The other runners left him at the starting line as if he were standing still, but he finished the race.
