Preparation of former heavyweight oarsmen to compete as lightweight rowers over 16 weeks: Three case studies
Article Abstract:
A study aims to support and monitor a group of relatively small but experienced heavyweight rowers as they decreased their body mass to qualify as lightweight rowers for the first time. Results confirm that the recruitment of potential lightweight rowers from within the heavyweight rowing community is an effective method of strengthening the depth of lightweight rowing talent, although the chronic weight loss strategies undertaken by the rowers may have certain consequences.

A study was conducted to examine the body-mass management practices of lightweight rowers before competition and the data is compared with the guidelines of the International Federation of Rowing Association (FISA). The result showed that few rowers were natural lightweight, and the majority reduced their body mass in the weeks before a regatta.
