Racing counts: the value of collecting races is in the experiences you gain

Some runners have participated in an incredible number of races. For example, Sy Mah ran 524 marathons, and John Kelley has run in excess of 1,000 races. However, the greatest value of races lies in the memories they bring, rather than keeping a precise count.

The million-dollar bonuses for impossible times in the New York City Marathon took away from the competition and put undue emphasis on times and records. Sponsor Fred Lebow's offer was well-meaning, but it makes anything less than a record seem a failure.

Father's footsteps

An avid runner and a writer remembers his late father, who also pursued both activities, and realizes how much like his father he had become. The father was a stutterer so he did not say much, but he left little doubt about how proud he was of his family.
