Physicians believe that many gastrointestinal problems are caused by the tendency of many people to wear clothes that are too small. Wearing tight clothes exacerbate a hiatal hernia. Doctors advise that people should be able to insert three fingers between their stomach and waistband.

Women with obesity-related problems who lost 20 or more pounds in the year before their study participation were 20% less likely to die in the next 12 years than women in the study who did not lose weight. The weight loss was linked to reduced risk of death due to diabetes and cancer.
