Some of the fishing and hunting highlights in the Southwestern States are described, along with various public land areas in the region. The Southwest is a land often dominated by a warm sun, and for the hunters and fishers it is an area in which there is no off-season.

The all-tackle world record for largemouth bass--22 pounds 4 ounces--has been standing since 1932. Use of the emerging science of fisheries-genetics coupled with innovations in regulations would possibly cause the record to tumble after 70 years.

Untapped tarpon

The Gulf of Mexico is an excellent place to go tarpon fishing. Visitors to the extreme southeastern coast of Louisiana will find tarpon traveling in large schools. The area is described, and a fishing guide discusses angling.
