Taonui's run

Tony Gooch in his Taonui is the first person to sail single-handed nonstop around the world starting and finishing on the west coast of USA and it took him 176 days to accomplish the task. Taonui is a tough 44-foot aluminum sloop, has a displacement of 15 tons and speed of 9-10 knots and Gooch was pleased with its performance during circumnavigation.

Tony Jarrett had always dreamed since childhood to sail offshore and at 61 he bought his first cruising boat, a Catalina 30. When finally at 65 with a history of bladder cancer, he decided to explore his dream, he bought C&C 36, upgraded it with a few minor changes and set sail down the California coast bound for Mexico with two friends as crew.

Roland Brener, an internationally acclaimed sculptor build a new cold-molded wood boat called new Reality a modified version of the original 8-meter Reality built in 1935. The changes made included a deeper bow profile, a larger cabin trunk, a reverse transom, and higher freeboard, which required increasing the beam.
