Potential free agents must be excluded from the protection lists that major league baseball clubs submit for the Nov 1992 expansion draft. Some feel this opens up the prospect of secret deals, with clubs offering a bonus if a player agrees to sign after the draft.

Donn Clendenon was named World Series Most Valuable Player in 1969, the year the New York Mets became the first expansion team to win the championship. Clendenon later entered the legal profession and was briefly considered for the baseball commissioner's job.
