The effects of goal setting, self-efficacy, competition, and personal traits on the performance of an endurance task
Article Abstract:
The effects of goal setting, self-efficacy, competition and personality on the performance of a sit-up task were analyzed. The hypothesis that assigned goals, competition and personality would affect performance was tested. It was also assumed that personal goals and self-efficacy will have more significant effects than assigned goals, competition or personality. Results showed that competition had no effect on performance, personal goals commitment or self-efficacy. However, personal goals and efficacy determined performance of a sit-up task.

Goal setting in sport and exercise: a research synthesis to resolve the controversy
Article Abstract:
Goal setting, as a motivational factor in sports, was evaluated using statistical methods. Findings indicate that goal setting improves performance in sports by 0.34 of a standard deviation. The significant relationship between goal setting and performance becomes even more apparent when the motivating factors are moderate, absolute and combined short- and long-term goals.

Thanks anyway, but I 'm not smoking what you 're smoking: a reply to Hale, Holmes, Smith, Fowler, and Collins
Article Abstract:
Hale et al provides a thesis, which has little support in the psychology literature for peripheral-based explanations, which is correct. Hale et al are noted for their critical writings and it is suggested that they should publish scientific data rather that mere words.
