Article Abstract:
A sailor's inaugural custodial experience resulted from a misunderstanding with a South American bribe broker on his first major voyage as skipper. His second brush with the law came 20 years later when, as a skipper of a large sail-training vessel, he docked in the northern French port of Fecamp with his crew in their late teens and the mate was planning to take them round the local Benedictine distillery to broaden their minds.

Silent service

Experiences of sailors claim that sailing is not a silent pass-time, but a noisy business. The only time sailing is silent is when the sea is flat with no motorboats sailing around and when all the audio signals of the instruments are muted.
