Alternatives to incarceration
Article Abstract:
The US criminal justice system addresses crime with retribution-based punishment meted out through penitentiary incarceration. Continued incidence of crime and increases in prison populations has made alternatives to incarceration attractive to some members of the public, legislatures, and the judiciary. Differing types, causes, and perpetrators of crime may best be dealt with through other methods which may better institute a broader range of rationales for the justice system, such as deterrence, diversion, and rehabilitation. Barriers to alternatives must be overcome.
