Belgium replaces home flag aid with EC subsidy
Article Abstract:
The Belgian government's decision to adopt the EC's 9% ceiling on shipbuilding subsidies could adversely affect the country's shipbuilding industry. Previously, the government provided favorable rates loans to Belgian-flagged shipowners and shipbuilders. One of the shipyards severely affected by the change in subsidy policy was Boelwerf which filed for bankruptcy in late 1992. However, the Belgian government intervened to allow Boelwerf to continue to operate until it finishes all its shipbuilding contracts. Boelwerf has had to restructure its operations to continue operations.

Spanish government fails to meet subsidy payments
Article Abstract:
Many Spanish shipyards are finding it difficult to attract new ship orders because of increased competition from other European shipyards. In addition, the Spanish government's refusal to allow banks to offer adequate funding to shipyards has also adversely affected the Spanish shipbuilding industry. Consequently, many Spanish shipyards are adopting measures to streamline their operations. These measures include breaking up shipyard operations into smaller but more financially manageable operations.
