Difficult times face Germany's shipbuilders
Article Abstract:
German shipbuilders are seeking the government's assistance in the middle of a serious price war. Subsidies run at about 2-3%, far below the EC upper limit of 9%. The government does not have the funds to support the industry, and also must balance the needs of eastern German builders who are struggling to meet the standards of the western yards. Price dumping on the part of Asian and Polish builders looking for foreign currency is forcing the German builders to cut prices at this inopportune time. An analysis of each of the major German shipbuilders is provided.

Building is small but focused
Article Abstract:
The Swedish shipbuilding industry is one of the most competitive industries in the world despite the absence of government subsidies. One of the factors that has helped boost the small industry's international competitiveness has been the shipyards' commitment to quality, low-cost services. In addition, the industry's small size ensures that all its shipyards have almost year-round business. For FY 1995, the industry is expected to generate $28.4 million in revenue which way above its 1994 turnover of $22.4 million.

Remaining undaunted
Article Abstract:
The relative strength of the krona as against the US dollar and the unequal market on subsidies have had a great impact on Danish shipyards. Industry executives report that there has been a marked decline in orders although some companies have managed to cope with the situation by focusing on specialized vessel markets. Despite the current difficulties, Danish shipbuilders are optimistic that the decline is only temporary and that an improvement will soon take place.
