Middle East work picks up
Article Abstract:
The Persian Gulf region's shiprepair yards have intensified their activities for the months of Mar and Apr 1999, after a rather slow start at the beginning of the year. Two factors were responsible for the slow movement of business in the early part of the year. These were uncertainty on the future of very large cargo carriers and intense competition from Singaporean shipyards. However, the region's shipyards were quite optimistic that the industry will be able to withstand competition from other areas as well as endure the weak market conditions.

Increased activity in the Gulf
Article Abstract:
The Arabian Gulf's ship repair industry enjoys increased activity as it gains expertise in large conversion works. ASRY and Dubai Drydocks, its two gian facilities, have edged out Singapore in the ULCC/VLCC tanker market. Aside from tanker trade, non-tankers trading provides additional jobs for many smaller shipyards, mostly based in the UAE. However, prices remained flat despite increase in the volume of business since 1993.
