Agents under pressure to surrender client database

Leading UK tour operator Thomson Holidays Ltd. is to introduce a new agency commission scheme from 15 Oct 1998. Around 2,000 agents, who must do either more than 25% of their business or $500,000 worth of business with Thomson to qualify, will become preferred agents. They will receive 12% commission provided they give Thomson access to their customer databases. Another group of agents will receive 7% commission, with the opportunity to earn 10% for high sales and good brochure display. The third group, comprising vertically-integrated agencies, will receive the basic 7% commission.
