Europe
Article Abstract:
Austria's tourist industry appears to be recovering, with tourist arrivals in 1998 reaching 24.9 million, of which 17.4 millions were from overseas. Austria's long-haul market is dominated by arrivals from the US and Japan. Elsewhere in Europe, Italy's results continue to be positive although future prospects remain uncertain. Turkey's tourist industry is in trouble, rising only marginally in 1998 and facing a downturn because of terrorist fears.

Oman
Article Abstract:
The young nation of Oman has traditionally relied on oil revenues for its wealth but tourism is central to the government's long-term economic development and incentives are being offered to the private sector for tourism investment. A secondary aim of supporting tourism is to find employment for Omanis, particularly women. International tourist numbers reached 612,000 in 1998, up 63.2% from 375,000 in 1997.
