First it was alcohol, now it's smoke
Article Abstract:
The UK government is considering a ban on smoking in pubs and restaurants, but such an action would pose a serious threat to the hospitality industry. A ban on smoking by the authorities in California and in Toronto, Canada, produced a drop in sales of up to 35%. The hospitality industry should begin considering alternative options, including division of venues into smoking and non-smoking areas or the installation of air improvement equipment, as a counter-measure to the proposals under consideration.

Time for work
Article Abstract:
The Advocate General to the European Court has ruled that the UK challenge against the court relating to the the Working Time Directive should be rejected. The directive was meant to be part of the Social Charter, which the UK has not endorsed, but the European Union brought it in under health and safety regulations, which the UK can fight less easily. The directive will affect the tourist industry, though, as it is an industry affected by seasonal demand, there is scope for some flexibility.
