Leisure services suffer with continued cutbacks
Article Abstract:
Spending on sport and recreation is almost at a standstill and cutbacks are expected, according to a survey by CELTS, the Survey of Local Authorities Leisure Services Budgets - 1996/7. There has been a reduction in sport and library budgets which has led to reduced service and staff levels. Local authority budgets are also under pressure from some flagship projects inspired by the hope of lottery cash. Also there is a backlog of repairs and maintenance, estimated at 100 million pounds sterling.

All in a day's work: overwork and dealing with drunken customers is often a hazard of the leisure industry says a new report
Article Abstract:
A survey of union safety experts in the leisure industry found that overwork and stress are major problems, with other major hazards being back strains, trips, slips and falls. The leisure sector has fewer safety reps than many sectors and there is a need for employers to recognise unions and make use of their expertise. Guidance on preventing occupational stress was issued by the Health and Safety Executive in 1995, but employers' attitudes are slow to change.
