Cheaper flights are usually obtainable through outlets such as tour operators, airlines, classified advertisements and teletext, but the small print attached to the fare should be examined for possible pitfalls. Two new materials have been developed that expand when stretched, a remarkable property known as a negative Poisson's ratio. The first material, developed by K.L. Alderson and K.E. Evans, is a microporous ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene polymer. The second material, developed by G. Milton, is a laminated composite material. Both materials may lead to better control of the negative Poisson's property and to a wide variety of potential uses.
