Italy is the fourth most popular tourist destination worldwide with 29.2 million tourists visiting the country in 1995, according to the World Tourism Organization. The rate of tourism is predicted to have increased to 30 million by 1996. Earnings from tourism reached 27,000 billion lira in 1995 which gave Italy the third position in world rankings according to tourist receipts. Visitors from abroad spent 38,000 billion lira and took 35.5% of tourist bednights during 1994. Employment in the Italian tourism industry increased from around 4.1% in 1988 to 4.5% in 1996.

Article Abstract:
The easing of border restrictions has helped the rise in tourist arrivals to Poland during the past five years. There are widely differing figures for travel receipts measured by the Central Bank and the IOT, with Central Bank figures based on data from the banking system and exchange offices in hotels. Visitors spent an average of $84 per person in 1995, with the foreign tourism spend at $174. The main purpose of visits in 1995 were relaxation, touring, hobbies and sports. The tourism industry in Poland is been earmarked to receive PHARE assistance.
