Japan
Article Abstract:
Inbound travel to Japan in 1996 recovered lost ground from 1995, although the surge in visitation has not yet improved earnings, according to a report. There are concerns that Japan's status as a tourist destination is diminishing, when tourism in Asia is buoyant. There is a need for a more positive tourism policy and the Ministry of Transport has announced plans for increasing tourism to Japan, such as the Welcome Plan 21. The report looks at general trends in visitor arrivals and notes that the major market was South Korea in 1995 with 873,635 visitors. It also notes a rise of overseas visitors to the country's theme parks, and details expenditure, length of stay and accommodation, considering the buoyant convention tourism market in detail.

Maldives shows all-year growth
Article Abstract:
The Maldives is quickly becoming a year round holiday destination according to many tour operators. Meier's Weltreisen, a German operator, has seen bookings rise 52% in summer 1997, compared to summer 1996, and winter bookings have risen 10%. Visits are usually for two weeks and there has particularly high interest among divers. Somak Holidays, a UK operator, introduced the Maldives in April, and the exclusive, upmarket islands are performing the best.
