South Africa
Article Abstract:
Increased political stability and a recognition of tourism as a valuable contribution to the South African economy has led to a high level of committment to the industry by the South African government in 1999. Plans to help the industry include raising up to 300 million rand each year through a 2% levy on after-tax profits. The industry is also seeking to expand its appeal to the conference market, which requires investment to build new, larger conference facilities. There is plenty of room for improvement in the industry, which contributes only 2.6% to gross domestic product in 1998.

Malta
Article Abstract:
Malta's tourist industry, after undergoing a period of decline at the beginning of the 1980s, grew steadily until 1994 to reach 1.18 million visitors. However, arrivals dropped by 5.1% in 1995 to some 1.11 million, mainly because of a fall in the UK market, upon which Malta is overdependent. Malta has a long way to go to improve the quality of its tourist industry, particularly in the provision of services such as telecommunications, power and water.
