A number of significant developments took place in the UK pay-to-play leisure machine sector in 1998. The Triennial Review in Jul 1998 increased the maximum prize level for the all-cash machine by 50% to 15 pounds sterling, with the maximum prize for club machines in casinos being increased to 1,000 pounds sterling and in bingo halls to 500 pounds sterling. The Budget in Mar 1998 increased Amusement Machine Licence Duty on AWP machines by more than 20% to 645 pounds sterling. Another significant development was the introduction of the 2 pounds sterling coin in Jun 1998.

The United Kingdom casino industry must be deregulated if it to have the same business opportunities as other sectors. It earned 2.7 billion pounds sterling in 1997 and provides services to twelve million people per annum. Casinos, like other businesses, should be allowed to advertize on media other than the Internet worldwide communications network. The British Casino Association is striving to bring about further reforms.

A guide to available bottled and purified water products is presented. UK company Zenith International's survey of the bottled water market suggests declining sales for 1993 with an improvement in 1994. Ten companies dominate the market despite the establishment of 40-50 new companies since 1991. Perrier UK is the major company with an 18% market share. Evian is the major brand with an 11% market share.
