Olympic Games 2000: can Manchester win?
Article Abstract:
A survey has revealed optimism towards Manchester's bid to host the Olympic games in 2000. A sample of leisure professionals considered good communications and local authority support helpful to the bid. However, opinion was divided on the influence of Manchester's industrial heritage. Most felt that the games would bring economic and sporting benefits to the area. Most considered extra government funding essential but that the Games should be profitable.

Arena showpiece: Manchester's Olympic indoor stadium, the Victoria Arena has been handed over to the management team

Ogden Entertainment Services is to manage Manchester's Victoria Arena in a 20 year contract. The indoor stadium will hold 19,500 people and will open in summer 1995, featuring not only sporting events, but theatrical productions including pop concerts and opera. Ogden vice president, Frank Russo Jnr, believes the areas will be one of the most successful in the work, and expects 1.7 million people to visit during its first year.

Going for gold
Article Abstract:
Manchester, England is bidding to host the Olympic games in 2000. The Government has committed 55 million pounds sterling for facilities and 15 million pounds for the site. New venues include the Victoria arena and the National Cycling Centre. Most venues will be within a two mile radius. The current bid is Manchester's second attempt to host the games. Obvious commitment makes Manchester a prime contender for 2000.
